Understanding IELTS Section Band Scores
Grasping the IELTS scoring methodology is essential for understanding your test outcomes and plotting future steps. In the IELTS, the components of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are given equal weight and are scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 9, in increments of 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75.
IELTS Score Calculation:
To determine the overall band score, the average of the scores from all four sections of the test is taken. This average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Specifically, scores that end in .25 are rounded up to the nearest half band, and those ending in .75 are rounded up to the nearest whole band.
Interpreting IELTS Scores:

How to Calculate IELTS Score?
- Score Range: IELTS scores range from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 9. Importantly, candidates can achieve scores in .5 increments, such as 5.5 or 6.5.
- Individual Skill Scores: Each skill area—Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking—is awarded a separate band score.
- Aggregate Score: This score represents the average of all individual skill scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5 or whole number. Breakdown of Scoring for Each Section:
- The section includes 40 questions, with each correct answer earning one point. The total number of correct answers (out of 40) is converted into a band score ranging from 1 to 9.
- Similar to Listening, the Reading section contains 40 questions. The conversion of raw scores (up to 40) into band scores follows the same method.
- The Writing section is evaluated based on IELTS Writing Band descriptors, which guide examiners in assessing Writing Tasks 1 and 2.
- Understanding the IELTS Speaking band descriptors provides insight into the criteria used to evaluate performance in the Speaking test.
